San Juan County Crime Stoppers
Meet the New Executive Director
San Juan Safe Communities Initiative welcomes a new partnership with San Juan County Crime Stoppers. In this video we introduce you to the new Executive Director, Jayme Harcrow.
Crime Stoppers originated in Albuquerque following the fatal shooting of a gas station attendant in 1975. Then Detective, Greg MacAleese approached the local television station to broadcast a re-enactment of the crime. A $1000 reward was offered for information that would lead to the killers’ arrest. An onlooker called within 72 hours citing they had not called before, as they did not want to get involved. MacAleese realized that fear and apathy were the main reasons people avoid involvement.
The first chapter was formed in 1976 and utilized the anonymous reporting system. Rewards are offered to tipsters that hold information leading to the arrest of the suspects. Crime Stopper programs are now nationwide and report being responsible for over 500,000 arrests and an excess of $4 billion dollars in recovered stolen property.
