San Juan County: Investing in Economic Growth, Mental Health, and Outdoor Recreation
Guests: Commissioner Chair Terri Fortner & County Manager Mike Stark
San Juan County is making significant strides in economic development, mental health services, and outdoor recreation, shaping the region’s future. The Four Corners Freight Rail Project aims to connect the county to the national rail network, boosting business growth and job creation. With a $2 million feasibility study near completion and an additional $5 million in funding, five potential routes connecting to BNSF’s transcontinental line are under review. A proposed transloading facility near NAPI headquarters would serve as a key economic hub, enhancing industrial expansion.
To improve mental health services, the county is developing the Crisis Triage Center (CTC), a short-term stabilization facility for individuals in crisis, reducing ER visits and jail bookings. The Navigation Center, now Community Compass under Presbyterian Medical Services (PMS), provides mental health resources, referrals, and essential services. PMS is considering operating the CTC, with local and state legislators working to secure funding, ensuring better care for those in crisis while alleviating pressure on emergency services.
Outdoor recreation remains a focus with the introduction of the Gravel Adventure Guidebook, promoting off-road biking routes that range from 12 to 100 miles. Funded by the Outdoor Recreation Division, the guide highlights scenic trails and is available locally and in surrounding states. Additional efforts include expanding biking trails like the Boneyard Trail and Kirtland trail system. These initiatives not only attract tourists but also improve local health, wellness, and quality of life, positioning San Juan County as an outdoor adventure destination.
